On Sunday night (Aug. 28), Taylor Swift skipped the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards -- but, apparently, not for any of the reasons reported by gossip blogs. Rather, the country-turned-pop superstar is simply doing her civic duty.

On Monday (Aug. 29), a Twitter user named Tracy Bates shared that she had been called for jury duty ... along with Swift. She and the singer were selected for the same panel, and although Bates would not reveal where the jury selection process was taking place, she shared many photos of Swift, as well as video of a conversation happening between Swift and the other potential jurors. Bates also reports that Swift was more than happy to take selfies with and sign autographs for those in the room with her.

TMZ reports that after being questioned by lawyers, Swift was dismissed from serving due to possible bias.

Swift last released an album, 1989, in 2014; the project became only the fifth record ever to spend its entire first year in the all-genre Billboard 200 Top 10. Swift’s newest album also became the best-selling album of 2014 and one of only four albums to be certified platinum, for sales in excess of one million units, that year. Fans have been hoping for new music from Swift soon, but Big Machine Label Group head Scott Borchetta has told them not to expect Swift to stick to her routine of releasing a new album every two years this time around.

As for the 2016 VMAs, Swift's no-show didn't stop Kanye West from referencing her from stage.
