In a frank new interview with the Guardian, country outlaw Steve Earle dished about his divorce from songwriter (and sister of Shelby Lynne) Allison Moorer.

Married in 2005, Earle and Moorer split in 2012, two years after their son John Henry Earle was born. In the interview, Earle says that the stress that followed his son’s autism diagnosis was likely the “straw that broke the camel’s back” in their marriage.

“But I think she was going to leave me anyway,” Earle says. “She traded me in for a younger, skinnier, less talented singer-songwriter.”

That “skinnier, less-talented singer-songwriter” Earle is referring to is none other than Hayes Carll, who has been dating Moorer since at least 2016. The two have since performed and toured together. As for Earle, he’s largely staying single.

“There are women, but I like sitting where I want to in the movies and when you go to a theatre at the last minute you can get a really good seat if you’re looking for a single,” he says. “Being single in New York City doesn’t suck.”

Earle’s latest album, titled So You Wanna Be an Outlaw, was released on June 16. Earle is touring throughout the summer in support of the album, complete with album signings and solo shows at record stores in Dallas, Austin, Los Angeles and more.
