Steve Earle kicked off an unforgettable week with a performance on the Late Show With David Letterman last Monday (Feb. 23).

Earle and his band, the Dukes, played his new single, "You're the Best Lover That I Ever Had," nearly 26 years to the date after his 1989 Late Show debut. The appearance was Earle's last on the show.

Also last week, Earle's latest record, Terraplane, claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Blues chart, the No. 2 spot on the Folk chart, and the No. 3 spots on the Country and Independent Current Albums charts. Terraplane also made it onto Billboard's Top 200 (No. 21) and Billboard 200 (No. 39) charts.

The disc was inspired by Earle's solo tour through Europe.

“The blues are anything but superficial,” he explains. “In fact, they run so deep and dark and close to the bone that folks walk around everyday with the blues as though it were perfectly natural for a human being to go on living with a broken heart (apologies to Tony Kushner).

“For my part, I’ve only ever believed two things about the blues,” he continues. “One, that they are very democratic, the commonest of human experience, perhaps the only thing that we all truly share, and two, that one day, when it was time, I would make this record.”

On April 15, the 60-year-old will kick off a full-band tour, which includes a stop at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif., on April 24, as well a June 26 concert with Gregg Allman in Boise, Idaho. A current complete list of tour dates is available below; updates will be posted on Earle's website.

Terraplane is available for download on iTunes.
