Shovels & Rope are preparing to release their fourth album, Little Seeds, on Oct. 7. The duo's Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent (who are husband and wife) made the new project the most personal one they've yet released.

Little Seeds contains 13 tracks inspired by recent occurrences (sometimes difficult ones) in Hearst and Trent's lives: the death of a friend, a parent's Alzheimer's diagnosis, the birth of their first child and the church shooting that took place in their hometown of Charleston, S.C., in 2015. The album's lead song, "I Know," is a playful tune about competition in life and, especially, in career.

“No matter what career you’re in, you find petty jealousy,” Hearst tells the Wall Street Journal of the song. “This is a story about two bands that came up together and were friends, but in competition -- you’re watching each other and feeling mutually jealous. It’s a silly expression of that.”
