Scotty McCreery had some pretty big shoes to fill during a recent performance at the Grand Ole Opry, but the North Carolina native once again proved his unbelievable vocal prowess when he sang a cover of George Jones' "The Grand Tour."

The 21-year-old belted out the 1974 tune, which features lines like, "As you leave, you'll see the nursery / Oh, she left me without mercy / Taking nothing but / Our baby and my heart," showing an affinity for the classics from decades ago.

McCreery has plenty of his own songs to perform, but he has been known to add several older covers into his setlists, including Alabama's "Mountain Music," "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried," among others. At a previous appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, the Season 10 American Idol winner performed a cover of Conway Twitty's "Hello Darlin.'"

McCreery plans to release a new album this fall, full of new tunes with a classic edge.

"I’m going to make a country music record," McCreery says. "That’s what I had to try to convey to the label, and they were all for it. The stuff I grew up with was that kind of music — I want to have some depth and portray a different side.

“I love songwriting; it’s a way to explore what’s going on upstairs,” he adds. “These writers are the world’s best, and I just try to pick up little things they do. Most of the time, it starts with a guitar.”

McCreery is currently crossing the country with Rascal Flatts on their Riot Tour 2015. A complete list of dates is available on his website.
