Scotty McCreery has spoken publicly about his recent home invasion ordeal for the first time.

McCreery was visiting some friends at their apartment near the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh early on the morning of May 5 when three armed men burst in and held them at gunpoint, making off with wallets, cell phones and a laptop.

The 'American Idol' season 10 champion talked about the incident as he prepared to return the stage for the show's season finale. He said he and his friends had gotten burgers from a local eatery and returned to the apartment to watch 'Gladiator' when there was a knock at the door.

"One of the guys who lived there, he just figured it was a neighbor," McCreery tells USA Today. "He looked through his peep-hole -- the guys didn't have a mask or gloves, so he didn't look suspicious at all. My friend opened the door to see if he had a question, and we think the other three guys were nestled up against the door so we couldn't see them in the peephole. As soon as the door opened an inch, they barged in, guns waving. The first guy in the room had an assault rifle, and he put that right against the sternum of the guy who opened the door."

He adds, "The main guy, who was casing the living room, he had a pistol to my head and a pistol at another guy's head. It definitely puts your life in perspective when you're staring down the barrel of a pistol."

Raleigh police have arrested 19-year-old Mikkail Jamal Shaw in connection with the robbery. He is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Two other men are still at large.
