Singer Sammy Kershaw's Lafayette, La. home sustained heavy smoke damage after a fire broke out in his kitchen on Thursday (April 4). According to a statement, the "Cadillac Style" hitmaker inadvertently started the fire when he grabbed cans of his homemade spices he was delivering to a friend. The box containing the spices slid over the kitchen stove, catching the knobs that ignite the burners, and there were likely flammable items on the stovetop that caught fire.

Sammy told the Associated Press that he had recently installed a fire alarm, and that his home is only a short distance from the fire department. When his alarm company alerted him to the blaze, he immediately returned home and threw towels and blue jeans onto the stovetop to help smother the flames. Shortly after, firefighters arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze. No one was injured and Sammy reports that his memorabilia, including all of his master recordings are safe.

"You've got to count your blessings ... every one of them," says the singer, who is also known for the No. 1 hit "She Don't Know She's Beautiful," and the Top 10 tunes "Queen of My Double Wide Trailer," "Haunted Heart," "National Working Woman's Holiday" and more. In 1998, he had a Top 30 country hit with a Skip Ewing-penned song called "Matches," in which the lead character sets fire to a bar called the Broken Spoke.

"This could have been so much worse," a grateful Sammy says of the kitchen fire. "The guardian angel that God assigned to me is always working overtime."

In November of last year, Sammy's tour bus sustained major damage when another vehicle crashed into it in Nocona, Texas.
