Randy Travis is under heavy sedation while recovering from surgery following a stroke on Wednesday night. According to a representative, the singer remains in critical condition.

The 54-year-old singer was hospitalized in Texas on Sunday (July 7), suffering from viral cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. He was later transferred to another facility for a higher level of specialized care.

According to a statement from his doctors on Wednesday, the singer had begun to show signs of improvement, but later that evening he suffered a stroke as a result of his congestive heart failure. He was rushed into emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

Though he is now in recovery, Travis' situation remains very serious.

"His family continues to ask for prayers and support," Travis' publicist says in a statement Friday (July 12).
