Pistol Annies’ ‘Hush Hush’ Lyrics Are Loud and Proud

“If you listen to our music, you know that we’re not very good at keeping secrets,” Miranda Lambert tells The Boot of the true-to-life songs she and her Pistol Annies cohorts, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley have been writing together since a midnight phone call put the three of them in a room together for the first time.

Their debut album, Hell on Heels, put country fans (and music critics) on notice in 2011, and although Miranda’s fans were well aware of her penchant for truth-telling, the collection introduced a whole new group of followers to the forthright songs she has been crafting — nearly nonstop — with Ashley and Angaleena since their first writing session together. With their second album, Annie Up, due May 7, Lone Star Annie (Miranda), Hippie Annie (Ashley) and Holler Annie (Angaleena) have laid themselves even more bare, tacking everything from dark family secrets (“Hush Hush”) to wedded not-quite-bliss (“Unhappily Married”) to who’s really in charge of keeping it all together (“Girls Like Us”).

Ratcheting up the honesty is the album’s lead-off single, “Hush Hush,” a no-holds-barred tableau of holiday hijinks played out around the family dinner table. (Watch the song’s lyric video below.)

“It is 100 percent true,” Ashley says of the tune that puts the “fun” in dysfunctional families. “Everybody has something. There’s no family I’ve met that’s perfect; that doesn’t have some sort of an issue. We’re saying ‘Hush Hush,’ but what we’re really saying is, ‘Come on, speak up. Let’s tell each other what’s wrong, OK? A tattoo here down my side, you don’t like it? Why don’t you like it? Let’s talk about that.’ Then it’s over, instead of all the secrets and all the feelings getting hurt.”

“You can’t divorce ‘em,” Miranda says matter-of-factly. “You only get one family, and you cannot not have your family. So, there’s really no option but to get the hell over it.

“The quicker we talk about it, the quicker that happens,” Angaleena adds.

Miranda, whose high-profile celebrity, of course, also includes her marriage to fellow country superstar Blake Shelton, notes that while her relationship with her family, especially her mom, is a strong one, they can throw down with the best of them.

“[Family] can just say one little comment that will push you over the edge. My mother and me, we fight like we’re sisters, I swear we do. People get offended. They think I’m a horrible daughter because I talk to her the way I do. But she talks to me that way and we just get over it. When people think we’re in a fight, we’re like, “Oh, that wasn’t a fight! You should see a fight!” [laughs]

“But I’m sure that all three of us know how to push all their buttons, too,” Angaleena says.

“I remember when I first got a tattoo,” Ashley reveals. “My Poppy would talk about how trashy they are, just ‘trash, trash, trash.’ I got one on my wrist and he said, ‘What is that?’ He kept trying to rub it off. I had been rubbing my shoulders and I didn’t even tell him about this ‘Love Me Tender’ [tattoo] on my shoulder and he said, ‘What’s that?’ But it doesn’t matter, it’s my body.”

Annie Up, tattoos, scars and all, will be in stores May 7 and Pistol Annies will be on tour this summer.
