Martina McBride Talks Shaping Up and Saving Lives

Martina McBride fans might assume that the singer’s svelte figure is due to a restricted diet and hours of exercise, but she says that couldn’t be further from the truth. Still, she makes sure to start the day off right.

“Some days I do well and I eat really healthfully,” Martina tells Shape magazine. “But I don’t think we should deprive ourselves of anything, so some days I indulge and give in to cravings. I believe everything in moderation. But breakfast is important. I have two hard-boiled or scrambled eggs with whole-wheat toast and try to get some fruit in there.”

The married mother of three also tries to make sure her family has plenty of healthy options. “I always have apples and fruit in the house,” she notes. “It’s easier to eat something healthy if it’s within reach. I also have yogurt, cheese and crackers, and raw almonds.”

The powerhouse vocalist, who admits she indulges in “a really good cheeseburger and fries” occasionally, also likes to change up her exercise regime so she doesn’t get bored with the routine. “It varies throughout year depending on my motivation,” she explains. “I just took a little break so right now I’m starting again a couple of times a week doing cardio and weight training. I do yoga, lunges, crunches, things like that for 40 minutes twice a week. For cardio I usually do the elliptical, treadmill or walking.”

Martina has recently partnered with Yoplait’s Save Lids to Save Lives campaign, which benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Participating in the cause was an easy decision for the singer.

“Through the song that I had out, ‘I’m Gonna Love You Though It,’ I’ve been able to meet so many survivors, families, and supporters and have made a connection and wanted to do something to make a difference,” she explains.
