Little Big Town’s ‘Girl Crush’ Goes Double Platinum

Never underestimate the power of a girl crush. Little Big Town's hit single been certified double platinum, signifying sales of 2 million copies, by the RIAA.

Before taking the stage to perform at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Md., on April 8, the country quartet received a visit from a representative of the Recording Industry Association of America, who stopped by to share the good news and present Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet with a plaque commemorating the milestone.

In addition to its double-platinum certification, "Girl Crush" -- written by Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose -- won two 2015 CMA Awards (Song of the Year as well as Single of the Year) and earned a Song of the Year nomination and Best Country Song win at the 2016 Grammy Awards; the song also broke a long-standing chart record. All of the honors are especially meaningful considering that some radio stations allegedly pulled "Girl Crush" from their playlists after listeners complained about its perceived message — backlash that only made LBT stronger.

“I don’t know that we ever got angry,” Westbrook recalls. “In the beginning stages of that, when all of that was happening, there was a little bit of frustration and kind of going, ‘Really? Are we really talking about that? Is that what this is all going to be about?'”
