When Little Big Town announced their 2017 Ryman Auditorium residencyLittle Big Town at the Mother Church, the country quartet promised special guests -- and they delivered during the residency's opening show on Friday night (Feb. 24). During that night's show, LBT welcomed Chris Stapleton to the stage, to perform his hit "Tennessee Whiskey."

Little Big Town began "Tennessee Whiskey" a cappella, harmonizing on the lines "You're as warm as a glass of brandy / Honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time ..." as Stapleton quietly walked onstage and plugged in his guitar. From there, LBT let Stapleton take the lead, adding in harmonies throughout; the crowd loudly voiced their approval with cheers.

"He used to open shows for us!" Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild told the crowd at the end of "Tennessee Whiskey." "We know how to pick 'em!"

Written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, “Tennessee Whiskey” was first recorded by David Allan Coe for his 1981 album of the same name; his version peaked on the country charts at No. 77. In 1983, George Jones released his version of “Tennessee Whiskey” as the third single from his Shine On album, and hit No. 2 with the tune that November.

These days, "Tennessee Whiskey" is well-known to country fans thanks to Stapleton and Justin Timberlake’s career-making performance of it (and Timberlake’s “Drink You Away”) at the 2015 CMA Awards. Following that performance, Stapleton’s rendition of the song — which appears on his debut album, Traveller — hit No. 1 on the country charts; it was certified platinum in May of 2016 and is nominated for Song of the Year at the 2017 ACM Awards.

In addition to their Friday night Ryman show, Little Big Town performed at the hallowed venue on Saturday night (Feb. 25) as well. Additional Little Big Town at the Mother Church concerts are scheduled in May, July, September and November.
