Spongebob Squarepants may have to start wearing a cowboy hat because Lady Antebellum is writing original music for the new Spongebob Musical.

The energetic sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea is making his Broadway debut in 2016. A limited run will take place at Chicago's Oriental Theatre from June 7 to July 3, 2016 with a planned Broadway opening in the 2016-2017 season.

It's a "one-of-a-kind musical event" directed and co-conceived by Tina Landau with a book by Kyle Jarrow and music supervision by Tom Kitt.

Many well-known musical acts, including Lady A, are penning songs for the project including Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Jonathon Coulton, Dirty Projectors, the Flaming Lips, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s and They Might Be Giants. David Bowie will contribute an additional song too.

“I was drawn to this project not only for its wild theatrical possibility, but also because I felt SpongeBob, at its core, is a layered and hilarious ensemble comedy,” Landau says in a press statement.

“SpongeBob himself is of course its center and beating heart — the eternal innocent in a sea of cynics. He’s also the classic underdog hero, and so our production sets him on a hero’s journey with real stakes, all the while retaining the show’s trippy humor and irreverence. We’re taking our leads from the TV show but this is an original story, with an original design approach, and original songs written just for the occasion by an amazing array of songwriters.”

There's no word yet on what Lady A's Spongebob offering will be called, but we'll have the details when that happens. For now, fans need to soak in the last of the trio's time on the road for the 2015 Wheels Up Tour as they recently announced a step away from the limelight.

During their break, they'll spend time with their respective families, write music and simply enjoy life outside of the tour bus.
