Kid Rock laughed, he danced, he sang, he received gifts, he donated money to charities -- in short, the rocker/rapper made sure his three-hour birthday bash on January 15 at Ford Field in Detroit was the celebration to end all celebrations.

Billboard.com reports the birthday boy -- whose actual 40th birthday is January 17 -- was joined by Uncle Kracker (whom Kid introduced as "my best friend"), Sheryl Crow, Martina McBride, Anita Baker, Run-DMC's Rev. Run, J. Geils Band's Peter Wolf and supermodel Cindy Crawford.

"I'm going to cherish this moment for the rest of my life," Kid told the estimated 60,000 people who attended the celebration.

Just like any great celebration, there were messages from friends who couldn't attend -- Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno were among the high-profile celebrities who joined in via video. Kid also received presents, including a customized 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS presented via video by NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson.

But Detroit -- Kid Rock's beloved hometown -- was front and center in the celebration. The superstar used the event to present gifts of $25,000 each to four local charities and to continually extol the city's virtues.

Other high points of the three-hour event included Uncle Kracker joining Rock for a duet of 'Good to Be Me,' Martina, whose husband John's birthday celebration was the same day, singing her parts in 'Care' while T.I. appeared via video from prison; Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, leading the singing of 'Happy Birthday' and Anita Baker singing 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'

Several reviewers report that Sheryl's three-song set -- which included 'Picture' along with a "bump-and-grind" through 'All Right Now' was a highlight of the evening.

"At the end of the stage's long catwalk, the two slow danced underneath the light from the mirror ball above, like they were the only two people in the venue," Billboard reports. "In a night marked by lots of explosions and fist-pumping from the crowd, it was an unabashedly sweet, tender moment."

Rock and guests finished the show with the title track of 'Born Free.' But before the rocker left the show and continued to party with friends, family and Detroit athletes, he again expressed his love for his city, reports Billboard.

"I was born in Michigan and I'm gonna die in Michigan," Rock told the cheering crowd, adding that the love he gives Detroit returns to him ten-fold. "Never forget your roots."
