Kelsea Ballerini took up her acoustic guitar and absolutely slayed a stripped-down version of Tim McGraw's hit "Humble and Kind."

Performing the song live in the Bobby Bones Show's studio, Ballerini offered a heartfelt cover that certainly does justice to the poignant track from McGraw's recent Damn Country Music album. During her simple-but-beautiful take on "Humble and Kind," Ballerini exudes the qualities of a young singer who has taken the lyrics of the song to heart. She performs the ballad with conviction, remaining true to McGraw's original cut while putting her own spin on it.

"Humble and Kind" is directed at a generation entering the adult world, and it's clear that the song resonates with Ballerini just as strongly as it did with McGraw when he first heard it and couldn't stop thinking about his daughter leaving for college.

“I cried through every take,” McGraw admits to Taste of Country. “I would try to get myself together, and I’d get halfway through it and I would just start blubbering every time I tried to sing a line.”

McGraw adds, "I just thought it was a song that needed to be heard. When you find a song that says something and a song that means something to you, those are always special. You have fun songs, and you have songs that you do because you like the feel and songs that you do because you like the lyric. But I feel a responsibility to do music, make music, that I’m proud of.”

Ballerini is set to kick off her first-ever headlining tour, The First Time Tour, in October. The rising star has been keeping herself busy this summer, co-hosting the TV show Greatest Hits with Arsenio Hall and opening up for Rascal Flatts on their summer Rhythm & Roots Tour. Ballerini will also appear on Jason Aldean‘s upcoming album, They Don’t Know, set for release in September, and is working on her sophomore album.
