The #SaladGate debate within country music in 2015 had its benefits -- just ask Kalie Shorr. Inspired by the fallout from radio consultant Keith Hill, the 22-year-old, along with friends Hailey Steele and Lena Stone, penned her single "Fight Like a Girl."

"It’s been so crazy!" Shorr tells The Boot of the song's success. "It’s just completely changed my life, for the better."

"Fight Like a Girl" is in regular rotation on SiriusXM's The Highway station, but Shorr didn't go pitching the song to programmers; rather, an intern with a good ear is to thank for its addition to the channel's playlist.

"SiriusXM had an intern for The Highway who came to an acoustic show of mine in Nashville, where I played "Fight Like a Girl" just a little bit after I wrote it," Shorr recalls. "We had posted a YouTube video -- they found it, brought it up in a pitch meeting, were like, ‘Hey, can we play this song?’ and everybody liked it."

Shorr moved to Nashville after finishing high school early. She was looking to female artists for inspiration -- and, thankfully, she didn't need to look far.

“I think right now people are realizing that you have to do something different; you have to show who you are, not who radio or record labels want you to be," Shorr tells Taste of Country. "And I think that’s why Mickey Guyton and Kelsea Ballerini and Kacey Musgraves and Brandy Clark … all the girls who are hard hitting right now, I think that’s why they’re working, because they’re not afraid to be who they are."

In March, Shorr released an EP, the Y2K Mixtape, and is readying a full-length album. According to the singer herself, "I would expect new music [at the] beginning of 2017."

"Fight Like a Girl" is available for download on iTunes.
