Josh Turner, ‘Punching Bag’ Hits Stores June 12
Josh Turner has set June 12 as the release date for his fifth studio album, Punching Bag. It’s the follow-up to the singer’s Haywire, which reached No. 2 on the country chart (and No. 5 on the Billboard 200) in 2010. The first single from the new album, “Time Is Love,” is currently in the Top 20.
Josh co-wrote eight of the disc’s 11 tracks, penning many of them at the newly-built cabin on the property behind his home just outside Nashville.
“I’ve found throughout the years that I needed a place where I can go with no TV, no computer, no phone and just have no distractions and just be able to sit and think and just not be disturbed,” the South Carolina native told The Boot of his writing retreat. “It is a log cabin with a wrap-around porch, [and] it’s got a stone chimney fireplace. I want to be able to display a lot of the things that I’ve been able to accomplish, a lot of who I am in there, not just musically.”
To date, Josh has written 27 songs in the cabin which took two years to complete. “My hero and friend, John Anderson, was sitting across the table from me one day when we were writing and said, ‘What will really be a great day is when the songs you write here end up paying for this place!’”
The cabin is where Josh co-wrote what ultimately became the album’s title track, “Punching Bag,” with longtime friend and songwriting partner Pat McLaughlin.
“The idea comes from one of those days that we all have, where everything just blows up in your face and nothing goes right,” Josh says. “I had just had one of those days, and I came home and was standing in the closet with my wife and I unloaded on her about my day. I told her, ‘Sometimes I feel like a punching bag, like life is just beating me up.’ When I said that, it struck me that it could be a huge song title. So I punched it into my phone and saved it. I held on to it until the right opportunity, [when I met with Pat McLaughlin].”
Josh is currently on the road with a headlining tour sponsored by Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores. He has dates in Tennessee and Georgia this coming weekend. Keep track of his tour schedule here.
