Josh Goodlett grew up in a musical family, and it didn't take long for the music bug to hit him as well. The singer-songwriter released his debut single, "Why You Gotta Be That Way," in the spring of 2015 and has been performing throughout his native Kentucky, as well as in Georgia, Indiana and Tennessee, while he puts the finishing touches on his first full-length project.

"It’s going," Goodlett tells The Boot, "but it’s not going as fast as I want it to."

Clearly, the artist is anxious to release a record, but he's already learning the most difficult part of the process: the wait.

"I’m writing new music every day -- writing some of my best material -- and actually re-thinking the album because of some of the new material I am writing," Goodlett says. "I didn’t know really how the process worked in Nashville. Now I’ve figured out it’s hurry up and wait."

Fortunately, the engaged father of five children has a "great" and "supportive" family by his side.

"My kids think it’s very, very wild that they go to school and their friends are like, ‘I heard your dad’s song on the radio the other day.’ It’s fun," Goodlett muses. "... My fiancee is a big supporter of what I do. She really wants it to work, and she supports me in everything I do. It can’t be easy on her, to deal with five kids by herself when I’m on the road ... It’s constant.

"They are doing great," Goodlett continues. "They love what I’m doing, and they support me 100 percent."

One of Goodlett's most popular songs during his live show is a song called "Back in the Day," about high school football from a father's perspective.

"My oldest son plays high school football. I saw him go out on the field one night for a varsity game, [with] my name on the back of the jersey, which is his name, too. It kind of took me back," Goodlett explains. "So the next morning, I woke up, and I wrote a whole song about high school football and how me being a father, seeing my son on the field and seeing his name, our name, on the back of the jersey, took me back to my high school days. It’s probably the best song I’ve ever written."

Not normally a fan of awards shows, Goodlett says that he watched the 2015 CMA Awards and found himself transfixed by Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake's performance, not to mention Stapleton's three CMA Awards wins. The show gave Goodlett a much-needed boost -- a reminder that his hard work is about to pay off.

"I want to put out songs that touch you and songs that are real life. Chris writes real-life songs," Goodlett notes. "It’s kind of funny that the song he did on the CMAs was the one song he didn’t write on the album, but it drew people to him and drew people to his album, and he writes real-life country music. He writes stuff that actually happens, and that’s what I write. That’s how I write music."

Goodlett's music is available for download on iTunes.
