John Rich Doesn’t Think Gary Busey Is Crazy

This week’s episode of ‘Celebrity Apprentice‘ had contestant John Rich echoing the haunting words of another former contender, Trace Adkins, who said the show was an “exercise in restraint.” The same applied to John, especially when it came to dealing with his teammate, the seemingly unfocused Gary Busey.

Last week’s episode (April 10) was a precursor of the tension to come on last night’s (April 17) show with the eccentric actor returning victorious from the boardroom, which had his Backbone team groaning in unison. They were hoping Donald Trump would have kept musician Mark McGrath and “fired” Gary. John even told the actor that he was creating conflict within the ranks. “You’re either crazy or a saboteur,” John said calmly. “And I don’t think you’re crazy.”

For the episode, the men’s team gave Gary room enough to fail when he was named project manager of the week’s challenge. The group had to write, produce and star in a live cooking demonstration using Omaha Steaks products, as well as creating special meals and variety packs using the company’s products. Being unorganized and pretty much ineffective, Gary frustrated his team by assigning the task of cooking to Meat Loaf, who admitted he didn’t know how to cook. He also failed to allocate any responsibilities to the other two members of the group, John and Lil Jon.

When John attempted to create the menu for what Meat Loaf would be preparing, Gary continually interrupted the singer, causing John to leave the menus to the actor. When the menus were printed incorrectly, Gary tried to blame John, who chalked the mistake up to Gary’s proofreading.

At one point, John said, “We have been locked in a room with a mad man.” Later, he got hot under the collar when Gary denied calling John “boy” off-camera the previous day. Gary admitted to calling John, ‘K-boy,’ a sort of abbreviation of cowboy, which did not seem plausible to anyone in the room.

The men did not have any time for rehearsals, so they went in to the presentation completely unprepared. However, Meat Loaf pulled off the task and actually impressed the Omaha Steaks executives, who said he did such an amazing job that he could become a spokesperson for the company. Then it was Gary’s turn to describe the occasions surrounding each of the meals. His time-consuming and bizarre stories — including one about a family flying a kite after finishing a Father’s Day dinner — had the audience scratching their heads.

Afterward, it was time for the boardroom, where the ladies’ team, A.S.A.P., was declared the winner, and the guys were finally able to vent their frustrations about their teammate. It was there that John described Gary’s skills as project manager a “catastrophic collapse of time management,” and Lil Jon felt the actor was “orbiting in outer space” the whole time. When the Chairman of the Board finally fired Gary, the others stayed in the room until Gary had entered the elevator to avoid any more awkward confrontations.

Check out ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ next Sunday (April 24) as both teams take on the task of creating an ad campaign for the Trump Hotel Collection. With Gary gone, the men’s team should be able to break their losing streak and allow their creativity to flourish.

The show airs on Sundays at 9:00 PM ET/PT on NBC.

John agreed to do ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ to help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The singer-songwriter-producer has even written and recorded ‘For the Kids,’ with all proceeds from the song’s download on iTunes benefiting the hospital.
