Joey + Rory Ready to Celebrate Daughter Indiana’s ‘Very Special’ Birthday
A few months ago, it seemed unlikely that Joey Feek would live to see her daughter Indiana turn two years old. However, although she continues to cope with her terminal cancer diagnosis and remains in home hospice care, the country singer will likely get her wish and be able to celebrate her daughter’s second birthday on Wednesday (Feb. 17). The celebration, her husband says, will be small, but special.
In a new blog post, Rory Feek reveals that Indy’s birthday will be “Gruffalo themed,” after one of Indy’s favorite books and movies. In a past post, Feek explained that a Gruffalo is a character that the story’s main character, a mouse, thinks he made up but turns out to be real. They’re planning “Gruffalo crumble” cupcakes and “owl ice cream,” “and we will do our best to make it the very special day that it is.”
Although Joey Feek is “very fragile right now,” her husband and family are doing all that they can to include her in the celebrations.
“Our plan is to put streamers up around Joey’s bed and move Indiana’s high-chair in beside her, so Joey can be part of it. So she can watch our little-one eat her cupcake and rip the wrapping paper off her gifts,” Rory Feek writes. “… [but] with all of these plans we have, we will need to adjust for what my wife needs.”
Indiana Feek was born on Feb. 17, 2014; that March, her parents revealed that she was born with Down Syndrome, a chromosomal disorder.
“We trusted that God would give us the baby He wanted us to have … and He has. Out of all the parents in the world, He has chosen us to care for and raise this special gift,” the Feeks said at the time. “… We can’t wait to see where this new chapter in our lives leads us and what wonderful story unfolds in the coming years.”
Throughout Joey Feek’s battle with cancer, Rory Feek has shared sweet moments between his wife and their daughter.
“… I think our baby is continuing to cheer her mama on in her fight — the best way she knows how …,” Feek said in mid-January. “By making her smile.”
