Earlier this month, Joanna Smith joined Columbia Nashville labelmate Josh Thompson out on the road for his Cold Beers and Reindeers tour, which swept through Texas for a total of eight shows. After making an all day drive from Nashville to the Lonestar State, Joanna and her band were looking forward to settling in for a good night's rest after they arrived in Victoria, Texas for the tour's kick-off show.

"It was late by the time we got back to the hotel," Joanna tells The Boot. "It was around 12:45 AM, and we were all exhausted."

Joanna and her fiddle player, Caitlin, got settled in their room, but not for long. "We were in our room reading our books, and all of a sudden the fire alarm at the hotel went off," she recalls with a giggle. "It was the shrillest fire alarm I had ever heard! I immediately thought the worst, but Caitlin thought it was probably a false alarm. I panic and was like, 'Get the room key. We're taking the stairs because we're not getting on the elevator!'

"So there we were in our pajamas at the Holiday Inn Express trying to find the stairs," she continues with a laugh. "When we got to the lobby, it was a little smokey. I thought, 'Oh my God!' We were looking around, and all the guests were coming down from their rooms. Then I heard I heard a familiar voice say, 'Dude, I never thought putting a loaf of bread in a microwave would cause that much smoke!' It was my drummer, Trey. I could not believe the fire alarm going off was caused by someone we knew!"

When the fire department arrived to the hotel, they obtained the smokey loaf of bread and put Joanna's mind at ease for the night. "The lady at front desk was not happy because she had to field all these calls," Joanna says. "It was pretty awesome! Trey and my bass player, Jared, keep putting the blame on each other because they were sharing a room that night, but we have laughed so much over this thing!"

Joanna, Josh and picked back up on their Cold Beers and Reindeers tour Tuesday night

The Cold Beers and Reindeers tour, which also featured Broken Bow Records' James Wesley, wrapped up over the weekend (Saturday, December 18) in Amarillo, Texas. Joanna's next single from her forthcoming album will be 'Georgia Mud.' Look for the song to impact radio after the first of the year.
