Review: Jason Aldean Gives the Crowd What They Want at Houston Rodeo
Jason Aldean took to the Houston Rodeo stage for a sixth time on Thursday night (March 3), packing a whole lot of punch into a slightly abbreviated (compared to his recent tour stops) set.
In classic rodeo fashion, the country star arrived to the stage inside NRG Stadium in the back of a Ford pickup truck. JJ Watt and the Houston Texans usually take center stage inside the stadium, but for the month of March, the venue has been transformed for the annual rodeo, complete with a spinning stage atop the dirt. The setup allowed a slowly rotating Aldean to have some face time with every fan in the monstrous arena.
Aldean opened his show by playing three songs -- "Just Gettin' Started," "Gonna Know We Were Here" and "Take a Little Ride" -- before addressing the Texas crowd: "I'm not going to do a lot of talking. I think you came here to watch some rodeo and hear some singing." The singer's words were met with thunderous applause -- and then he rolled right into "When She Says Baby."
When it was time for Aldean, sporting his a casual T-shirt, jeans and a cowboy hat, to sing "Big Green Tractor," the entire arena was bathed in green light. During "Amarillo Sky," the wall of screens behind Aldean fittingly showed soft rolling clouds in a burning sunset. Also in his setlist for the evening were "Night Train," "My Kinda Party" and "Tattoos on This Town."
Shortly before the end of his show, Aldean broke out his smash hit "Burnin' It Down." As soon as the tune's opening notes came across the speakers, the crowd went wild. Of course, flames appeared on the large screens behind Aldean as he sang the fan-favorite song.
Aldean closed the night out with "Crazy Town," and when it was over, he jumped back into the bed of the truck that drove him into the arena, and away he went.
His stop at the Houston Rodeo came in between dates on Aldean's 2016 We Were Here Tour. The trek began in mid-January in Illinois; he is next headed to Australia throughout March, then will return to the U.S. for additional dates.
The 2016 Houston Rodeo, which runs throughout March, offers a star-studded concert lineup including Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan, among others. Some of country's newer talents, including Cole Swindell, who will be taking the stage on Saturday (March 5), are in this year's list of performers as well.
