Organizers are struggling to obtain funds for a historical marker at the birthplace of Louis "Grandpa" Jones, who died in 1998.

The Henderson County Historical and Genealogical Society in western Kentucky are planning to honor Jones, who was born in the county's Niagara community on Oct. 20, 1913, but they have only received $700 of the $2,500 needed for the project.

Jones -- pictured above with Minnie Pearl -- began performing in the '20s and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1946.

The 'Hee Haw' cast member was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

The marker was authorized by the Kentucky Historical Society in February. Donations can be sent to the historical society at P.O. Box 303, Henderson, Kentucky, 42419.
