Gloriana, ‘(Kissed You) Good Night’ — Story Behind the Lyrics

Warner Music Nashville

Gloriana‘s latest single, “(Kissed You) Good Night” is steadily climbing the charts, giving fans a promising preview of new music to come on the group’s sophomore album. The tune was written by Gloriana’s Tom Gossin, along with award-winning songwriter Josh Kear (who also co-wrote Carrie Underwood‘s “Before He Cheats” and Lady Antebellum‘s “Need You Now,” among other big hits).

“I had never met [Josh] before this day, so this was our first time getting together to write,” Tom tells The Boot. “We started talking about writing a song about the kind of moment in life that’s like one of those movie moments. It’s happening in real life, but you’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is a movie moment.’ Those are those times, that range of emotions that [can inspire] a moving song.”

The guys drew inspiration for the new song by a chance encounter Tom had at a restaurant earlier in the week. “I started thinking about my life, and coincidentally a couple days before this I had overheard a conversation a group of girls were having,” Tom explains. “I was eating, and they were at the next table. One of them had been on a date with a guy, and she was like, ‘Did he kiss you?’ She was like, ‘No, he didn’t do it at the end. It was a great date and he didn’t do it at the end, and I don’t know why.’”

The singer-songwriter, who is now happily engaged, had to return to his earlier dating days to find inspiration for the end of the song. “I’m thinking back to my life, thinking, ‘Man, that was always so hard,’” Tom notes. “I’ve always been kind of shy, and I don’t know if girls realize how hard that was. She said something like, ‘You know what, I don’t care if he’s scared or what, just do it.’ So that ends up becoming the first lyric of the song says, ‘I should have pushed you up against a wall.’ That’s where Josh and I started, and it fell into place pretty quickly after that.”

Tom is still a bit scarred by the memory of his own first kiss. “[Mine] was a girl that I went to grade school with,” he recalls. “We were at a birthday party. We were very young and she kissed me and all I could taste was Doritos … It was bad. I liked the girl right up until then. I don’t eat Doritos because of that.”

Gloriana, which also includes Rachel Reinert and Tom’s brother Mike Gossin, will release their new album, A Thousand Miles Left Behind, this summer.
