Under a cloudless blue sky, Eric Church rocked the crowd at Monday's (Jan. 11) College Football National Championship tailgate in Glendale, Ariz., with a setlist that included, among other songs, one of his newest tunes, "Record Year."

"Record Year" is one of 10 songs on Church's newest record, Mr. Misunderstood, which was released by surprise in early November. The lyrics tell the story of someone who's using music -- George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams and Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger are among the name-checked artists and albums, in addition to James Brown and Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life -- to get over a broken heart.

"Quarter notes and Hank's half time / Are poundin' on this heart of mine / Song to song, I pass my time / With these speakers on 10 / Your good-and-gone keeps me up all night / Along with Songs in the Key of Life," Church sings during the song's chorus. "I'm either gonna get over you / Or I'm gonna blow out my ears / Yeah, you're out there now / Doin' God knows how, and I'm stuck here / Havin' a record year."

In addition to Church's performance, before kickoff, Canaan Smith sang "America, the Beautiful" with members of the Phoenix Children's Chorus. Pop star Ciara performed the National Anthem.
