Dolly Parton Saves the Day
'9 to 5: The Musical' had its first sneak preview show Tuesday in Los Angeles, but not without a hitch. Just before the play began, Dolly Parton got up on stage and promised to return if there were any technical problems. Much to the audience's delight, there were. A moving set got stuck in the middle of Act 1, causing the production to be delayed ... and resulting in Dolly performing a mini-concert. While stagehands fixed the set, the country legend, who wrote all of the music for the play, serenaded the audience with her hits '9 to 5' and 'I Will Always Love You.'
"Whitney Houston may have sung the song better, but I made more money on it," Dolly joked, as the audience laughed and cheered.
The official opening night for '9 to 5: The Musical' is September 20 in Los Angeles. It will make the cross-country trek to Broadway early next year. The play stars Allison Janney in the role originated by Lily Tomlin, Stephanie J. Block as the character Jane Fonda played in the movie and Megan Hilty as Dolly's character.
