David Nail, who scored his first No. 1 hit with "Let It Rain" in 2011, never gets to spend much time at home. Yet he isn't about to complain.

"We've been out on the road, I feel like, for three years straight," he tells The Boot. "I think we've had two weekends off since February and it's been a great year. We've had a lot of things happen that were unexpected ... things that make me look back on 13 years ago when I decided to move here and go, 'OK, maybe I wasn't such an idiot.'"

The singer-songwriter previously served as an opening act for Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum, before spending much of this year performing in smaller venues by himself. Although many artists dream of landing a spot on such high-profile tours, David enjoys the solo tour experience.

"We've done 30 fall shows where I have headlined smaller clubs and theaters and stuff, and that's how I prefer it," he notes. "As awesome as it is to be with a big act and get three catered meals a day and get a dressing room with an actual shower in it, it's hard sometimes as a new artist to come across in 25 minutes. You get 25 minutes to hopefully impress these people. I think the longer set is more suitable for us and gives us an opportunity to connect better."

One thing the Missouri native is ready to do is enjoy some downtime with family and friends, when he finally takes a few months off the road. "We have been so busy and obviously I'm sure I'll be home for a week and go, 'I really wish we were working in December,'" says David. "But my guys in my band have babies that they missed out on, so I kind of have a little bit of mental anguish that I carry around, because I feel like I'm depriving them of their family time. I've let them all know that we're probably going to take most of December and most of January off, to recharge our batteries and gear up for hopefully doing it again."

David has several shows to play before he finally gets to unwind, including stops in Wisconsin, Illinois and Alabama. Keep track of his tour schedule here.
