Craig Morgan Reflects on Patriotism, Politics
Craig Morgan spent 10 years of active duty in the U.S. Army before leaving the armed forces to pursue his music career, and while the country star has spent the last 15 years of his life in country music, he admits that he still sometimes misses his former occupation.
"[I think about it] every day. I talk about it all the time -- especially when I go back," Morgan reveals to The Boot. "... That’s who I am. I’m not a star, I’m not a superstar person, I’m not a celebrity -- I’m a soldier. I’m the opposite of the life that I live. But at the same time, the life that I live, the guy that they see onstage, is the same guy at the house on the tractor. I don’t pretend to be anything different."
The singer admits that, even 15-plus years after his freshman album, he still struggles with being famous.
"When I’m walking through the airport and people are staring at me, I look to see if my pants are unzipped, because I’m still not used to being that person, and I’m cool with that," Morgan reveals. "That's just who I am."
Part of what fueled Morgan to enlist in the Army all those years ago -- his patriotism -- is what propels him to continue to embark on USO Tours, during which he performs for U.S. troops stationed all over the world, even though he says that he thinks America is "in a sad state."
"I ain’t ashamed to say that," Morgan maintains. "... I believe that we can and we need to make America great again. I was proud to be from a country that was always there to help other nations.
"We were the Volunteer Nation, I’m from the Volunteer State ... I am a volunteer. I’m a guy who still gets his rocks off by stopping and helping someone who’s been in an automobile accident. I’ll still do it every day," he continues. "If the bus pulls up, whether it’s a flat tire and some old lady or it’s a three-tractor trailer pileup, we’re going to stop, and I’m going to do what I’m supposed to do because that’s who I am. That’s the guy I am."
