Fresh off his Album of the Year win, Chris Stapleton returned to the awards show's stage to perform his song "Broken Halos" at the 51st annual Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 8). He is the reigning CMA Awards Male Vocalist of the Year, having won the trophy in both 2015 and 2016.

The performance was typically low-key and no-frills: Stapleton and his band were on a stage that resembled a late-night TV set, with brightly colored squares reminiscent of the Traveller singer's summer stage backdrop.

Still, like the rest of the awards show, the performance did feel a bit more somber than usual; the acoustic guitar-toting Stapleton added more vocal gravitas to the tune.

As per usual, Morgane Stapleton was to her husband's left, lending her typically understated harmonies while slightly facing him. As the song neared its end, she placed one hand casually on her baby bump, while playing tambourine with the other hand.

Stapleton's 2017 CMA Awards performance comes one year after his appearance alongside Dwight Yoakam during the  2016 CMA Awards. Together, they performed Willie Nelson and Ray Charles' iconic "Seven Spanish Angels," a nod to the awards show's 50th anniversary.

The 2017 CMA Awards are an important night for Stapleton, who is also nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year at the show. He's also preparing to release the second volume of his From A Room album, and he made his Austin City Limits debut back in October. Most excitingly, Stapleton's wife Morgane recently announced that the couple is expecting twins!

From A Room: Volume 2 is set for release on Dec. 1.
