After years of struggling in the music business, Chris Janson has some well-earned wisdom for other aspiring artists.

"Humble yourself. That's the thing I would tell a new artist," he told The Boot and other reporters at a recent media event. "And be prepared to be poor. Be prepared to be broke and lose a bunch before you win. But, man, when you win, it feels so good.

"I’ll tell you what, I guess the greatest part would be, if you believe like I do, put your nose to the grindstone and pray ... Thank the Lord, be thankful, thank the ones who got you there, and always humble yourself. Just be humble and put the work in," Janson adds. "Eventually it pays off. And it pays off in certain little ways -- sometimes when you don’t expect it -- so you have to keep your eyes open."

The singer-songwriter will soon join Blake Shelton on the road, on Shelton's winter tour. In addition to sharing a label (Warner Bros.), Janson and Shelton also have several hobbies and traits in common, which Janson thinks will help him win over the country superstar’s audiences.

“He hunts, he fishes, he says anything that he wants to, and he’s a great country singer. He’s a cool country dude,” Janson explains. “So, I think that the “Buy Me a Boat” audience is going to be the “Boys ‘Round Here” audience. I think it’s going to mesh like peas and carrots.”
