Charles Kelley Shares ‘Southern Accents’ [WATCH]

Charles Kelley continues to share the songs off of his solo album, The Driver, in advance of its release. The singer-songwriter has released a video of himself and his band performing “Southern Accents” on the top of the Capitol Records tower in Los Angeles, Calif.

“Southern Accents” is a cover of the title track of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ 1985 album, but it’s not new to Kelley: The Lady Antebellum member performed the tune with Trisha Yearwood back in 2013 at Petty Fest in Nashville.

“I’d always loved that song, and I always thought it would make a good country song, but I never thought about it necessarily as something Lady Antebellum would do,” Kelley tells Rolling Stone Country. However, the tune fits his solo project perfectly.

On The Driver, Kelley is accompanied on “Southern Accents” by none other than Stevie Nicks, whom Kelley calls “the biggest Tom Petty fan.”

“[Producer] Paul [Worley] kind of goes through the channels, and somehow it comes back that she wants to sing on it,” Kelley recalls, “so I was like, ‘Of course. It’s Stevie Nicks. Yes. She’s going to sing on it.’”

The Driver is set for release on Feb. 5. It is available for pre-order via iTunes. A list of all of Kelley’s upcoming dates is available on his website.
