Don’t expect to hear Carrie Underwood endorsing one of the United States’ current presidential candidates on social media or in concert on her 2016 Storyteller Tour. The singer says what’s important to her is that her fans are informed, whether their politics are the same as hers or not.

“More than anything, I want people to do their own homework. I don’t want people to vote for somebody because I told them to. I want them to find out about things that they are passionate about and what’s important to them and look at different candidates and policies. And try to make their own decisions on that,” Underwood tells Rolling Stone Country. “That’s where I stand, and I go and cast my vote like everybody else.”

Still, Underwood is not afraid to share her beliefs with her fans: She’s very open about her faith, both in her personal life and in her music, and in 2012, she revealed in an interview that she stands in favor of gay marriage. In 2014, Underwood performed at the Global Citizen Festival, part of the Global Poverty Project, which works to eradicate extreme poverty while also promoting volunteerism.

“They are so many causes,” Underwood maintains. “You can find something that you’re really passionate about.”

She adds jokingly to Rolling Stone Country, “My husband and I try to keep up with what’s going on, and my mom and I solve the problems of the world on a daily basis in our phone conversations. I try to take things that I’m passionate about and wanting people to get educated on and make up their own minds on things.”

While Underwood will likely not be the only country star to keep her voting habits private as the 2016 election approaches, in recent weeks, Kid RockLoretta Lynn and Merle Haggard have all voiced their opinions on Donald Trump’s bid for president.
