Carrie Underwood, George Strait Pick Songs for ‘Idol’ Finalists
Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina are the final two contestants as 'American Idol' gets ready to crown its tenth season winner. Both finalists have their eyes on a future in country music, so it seems only fitting that two of country's biggest stars -- Carrie Underwood and George Strait -- have been asked to chose one of the final songs each will perform.
Carrie, who won the fourth season of 'Idol,' will choose a song for Lauren to perform, while George, who holds the distinction of having more No. 1 songs than any country artist in history, will hand-pick a tune for Scotty.
In addition, each finalist will sing their favorite song from the entire 'AI' season, as well as their potential new single should they become this season's winner.
This season has quickly become a favorite for country music fans, with several reigning Nashville superstars, including Jason Aldean, Sugarland and Lady Antebellum all taking turns as performers on the famous stage. While most of the artists fortunate enough to be invited to sing on the hit TV show are already bona fide superstars, Lady A's Dave Haywood says the opportunity to sing even one song is a big career boost.
"I don't know if there's a much bigger show these days, and we're honored that they would actually want to have us on again," Dave tells The Boot of the trio's performance of their new single on the show. "We'd gotten the call a couple of months ago about [the appearance] when they'd laid out the schedule for the finals for 'Idol,' and we were trying to work in the studio to get something ready, and it was kind of a good, safe target for us to shoot for. We tried not to rush any of the music based on any deadlines, but we were fortunate enough to have 'Just a Kiss' ready to be released and performed."
Scotty and Lauren will perform their hand-picked songs tonight (May 24) at 8:00 PM ET on Fox. The season finale will air on Wednesday night, May 25 at 8:00 PM ET.
