Cam admits mistakes in her first hit single, "Burning House," and acknowledges a struggling relationship in her second one, "Mayday," both from her debut album, Untamed. Clearly, the singer is okay with baring her soul in her music -- even if it doesn't come easily.

"It’s terrifying. I think it’s really heavy to try and explain yourself in that spot," Cam tells The Boot. "But the thing that I like about the vulnerable spot is, usually that’s when other people really need a song.

"For "Burning House," a woman came up to me the other day and said, ‘I had been separated from my ex for 23 years, and I heard your song and how you went back and apologized. I did something wrong to him. I called him up, and I apologized,’" Cam recalls. "After 23 years! And now they’re friends and back in each other's lives.

"Because I explained that it was my fault, too, that meant a lot to her," she continues. "That’s all you can hope for, is the fact that you let go of the walls and stuff helps other people a little bit and makes for a good song."

One piece of the California native's music career that has come surprisingly easy, however, is filming music videos. An unexpected natural in front of the camera, Cam says the experience has been thrilling.

"I love making music videos," she shares. "I didn’t realize I was going to love it this much, but now, I’ve gotten to burn down a house, fake drown, take off on a plane -- the magic of it and dreaming it up and telling a whole new story is really addicting and really fun to see what other people find entertaining and how to make it really beautiful."

Cam is currently out on the road, serving as the opening act on Dierks Bentley's Somewhere on a Beach Tour. A list of all of Cam's upcoming shows is available on her website.
