Brad Paisley’s ‘Water’ Douses the Competition at No. 1
Brad Paisley's 'Water' made waves this week as it knocked Miranda Lambert's 'The House That Built Me' out of the top spot on both the Billboard and Mediabase/USA Today country charts. The tune is the singer's 17th chart-topping single of his career and makes history as it marks his 13 consecutive No. 1, second only to the legendary Sonny James as the solo country artist with having the most consecutive trips to the top of the charts. The Grand Ole Opry star and Country Music Hall of Famer enjoyed a five-year streak with 16 straight chart-topping hits.
In writing the song, Brad received a little advice from his wife, Kimberly Williams Paisley, in changing a line to make it more relatable. "[Take] 'go and grab someone you want to see in a bathing suit,' and the original line was 'grab someone who looks good in a bathing suit.' And that was a good example of listen to your spouse when you're a songwriter," Brad tells The Boot. "She said, 'I like everything but that line. None of us, there isn't a woman alive that thinks she looks good in a bathing suit.' I said, 'That's a good point.' And she said, 'So say it another way.' So we changed it to 'someone you want to see in a bathing suit.'"
One aspect of water fun as a child in the song is splashing around in an "inflatable pool full of Dad's hot air." Brad does not necessarily have to use his own hot air to inflate a pool for his two young sons, Huck and Jasper. "Our pool is one of those plastic ones that doesn't have to be blown up," explains Brad. "We have a little plastic pool you set out, and you fill it up ... But blowing up the Slip 'n Slide [is another thing]. There's areas of the Slip 'n Slide that's padded that you have to blow up, and you forget how hard that is to do. So, I cheated and took it down to the barn and used the air compressor."
'Water' is the fourth single from Brad's latest album, 'American Saturday Night.' Catch Brad performing the summertime hit in concert when he takes his H2O tour to Austin, Texas on July 10.
