Bobby Bare, ‘Farewell, Angelina’ — Exclusive Song Premiere

Legendary singer-songwriter Bobby Bare, whose best-known hits include "Detroit City" and "Marie Laveau," will release his latest album, Darker Than Light, on Nov. 13 on the Plowboy Records label. Produced by Plowboy co-founder Don Cusic and recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio B, the disc is Bare's first collection of all new material since 2005 and features his takes on songs by Bob Dylan, U2, Lead Belly, Alejandro Escovedo (who also makes a guest appearance) and more. The album also features several Bobby Bare originals.

Although he originally recorded it in 1965, Bob Dylan's version of "Farewell, Angelina" was not released until 1991. A cover by Joan Baez, issued in '65, was included on her album of the same name. Bare's new album presents the haunting ballad with an outlaw country twist. (Listen to the song below.)

Darker Than Light also includes "The Devil and Billy Markham," which puts music to the words of a Shel Silverstein poem originally published in 1979. In 2010, Bobby Bare was among the artists on a tribute CD to Shel Silverstein, called Twistable, Turnable Man and was longtime fan and friend of the poet, songwriter, children's book author and illustrator.

[He was] a very visual writer," Bare told The Boot of his friend. "When you heard one of his songs it was like watching a movie. That's how I sang his songs, watching this movie unfold. The first time he sang 'The Winner' for me, I had to make him quit in the middle of it, I was laughing so hard."

Backing the Grammy-winning icon on Darker Than Light is a band that includes Buddy Miller and Randy Scruggs on guitar, Byron House on bass, Marco Giovino on drums and other members of Robert Plant's Band of Joy.

Darker Than Light will be released Nov. 13.
