Country’s Best Drinking Songs, No. 6: Hank Williams Jr., ‘All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight’
Cheers-worthy lines: "Do you wanna drink? / Do ya wanna party? / Hey, this is ole Hank ready to get your summer started / I cooked a pig in the ground, we got some beer on ice / And all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight."
Hank Williams Jr. wrote and recorded this song which was released October 1984 as the second single from his album Major Moves. Not only did it become one of his signature songs, it also won many accolades, including Music Video of the Year at the CMAs and ACMs, nomination for CMA Male Vocalist of the Year and Grammy nods for Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance, Male in 1985.
It's safe to say it resonated with fans. The song references roasting pigs, beer on ice, a bachelor pad out in the woods and even a whirlpool that seats ten. If the singer invited us, we certainly wouldn't turn down the invitation. It's the perfect song to get the summer kicked off in exactly the right way.
A few re-writes to this song include 'All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down' and 'All My Rowdy Friends Are Dead.'
It was also a familiar tune on Monday nights, as Williams Jr. performed a re-worked version "All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night" from 1989 to 2011 as the opening theme to Monday Night Football.
