Alan Jackson and his family are mourning the loss of his mother-in-law, Nell Brown Jackson, who passed away on Friday morning (April 3) at the age of 94.

Nell Brown Jackson, the mother of Alan Jackson's wife Denise, was born on Dec. 6, 1920, in Madras, Ga., the youngest of 13 children. She and her husband, the late William Daniel Jackson, were married in August of 1937 and were active in local faith organizations, including as charter members of the Unity Baptist Church in both Jackson families' hometown of Newnan, Ga.

Much like her son-in-law, Nell Brown Jackson was a singer; according to her obituary, she was a soprano and a member of the Melody Trio, and she often sang in church and at weddings and funerals as a featured soloist. Additionally, she often performed at gospel nights at Melear's Restaurant in the 1950s and '60s.

"Nell's life was a simple love story for her God, her family, her church and her friends," reads her obituary. "She was happiest when she was with her children and grandchildren."

No specific cause of death was reported. Nell Brown Jackson is survived by three children -- including Denise Jackson, who has been married to Alan Jackson since 1979 -- eight grandchildren, including Alan and Denise Jackson's three daughters, Mattie, Ali and Dani, and 12 great-grandchildren.

A visitation is being held the evening of April 6, with the funeral service and internment scheduled for April 7. The family asks that those who wish to make a memorial donation in her memory do so to Unity Baptist Church or Emory Chapel United Methodist Church, both in Newnan.

The Boot extends our deepest condolences to Alan and Denise Jackson, their daughters and extended family.
