George Strait Named Decade’s Best
George Strait will add another prestigious award to his collection on April 6, 2009, when he is honored as the Academy of Country Music's Artist of the Decade at the posh MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
In addition to being a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait holds the distinction of having the most No. 1 songs in country music with 56, as well as the most RIAA platinum certifications, with an astonishing 32 different platinum or multi-platinum albums in his 25-plus-year career.
Only the fifth artist to ever receive the Artist of the Decade honor, following in the footsteps of Marty Robbins, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire and Garth Brooks, Strait is the first artist to have the event honored with his own TV special, set to air at a later date on CBS. The ceremony honoring Strait takes place one day after the ACM Awards ceremony, also being held in Las Vegas.
