Dailey & Vincent Win 7 Bluegrass Awards
The 19th Annual International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards on Thursday, October 2, mixed youthful exuberance with reverent tradition, filling Nashville's Ryman Auditorium with hard-driving acoustic music, and spotlighting the year's best and brightest bluegrass pickers, singers, and others who work behind the scenes in support of the genre.
But Vince Gill, on stage to present the Entertainer of the Year award, probably put it best when he quipped, "It was a pretty good year to be named 'Vincent.' Proving that point, he then revealed that the IBMA Entertainer of the Year was duo Dailey and Vincent, who were also the night's most honored artists. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent took home a total of 7 awards, also winning Album of the Year for their self-titled debut, Emerging Artist, Vocal Group, Gospel Recorded Performance, and Recorded Event of the Year.
Jamie Dailey, who throughout the evening was overcome with emotion and often on the verge of tears, also took home the award for Male Vocalist of the Year. As the show came to a close, the duo were found backstage, exclaiming, "We're going to the Waffle House!"
Hosted by nine-time Entertainer of the Year Del McCoury, performance highlights of the night included the Grascals' version of Waylon Jennings' classic, "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line," and the SteelDrivers' 'Drinkin' Dark Whiskey,' a tune country fans are familiar with thanks to Gary Allan. And proving the show to be truly "international," Swedish band G2 presented the award for Recorded Event of the Year, and joked about the "tens of Euros" to be made playing bluegrass overseas.
Also taking the stage to accept awards were fiddle player Michael Cleveland, who won a pair of trophies, and longtime Alison Krauss and Union Station bass player Barry Bales, who won his very first IBMA Bass Player of the Year award.
Women in bluegrass also made their presence known throughout the night, with Dale Ann Bradley winning the Female Vocalist of the Year award for the second consecutive year. Kristin Scott Benson, with her first nomination, became only the second female banjo player to win the award since Alison Brown took the trophy in 1991.
The IBMA Awards are just one of the highlights of "World of Bluegrass" week in Music City, which also includes new artist showcases, seminars on subjects of interest to bluegrass fans and businesspeople, and countless informal late-night jam sessions. Beginning Friday, October 3, the Nashville Convention Center plays host to the three-day Fan Fest, with live performances by dozens of the hottest acts in bluegrass.
